What Is Police Radar
Police radar uses radio waves to measure vehicle speed. A radio signal bounces off a vehicle and the frequency shift reveals its speed — the same Doppler effect used in weather radar. Modern systems like the Stalker DSR 2X+ add app connectivity, digital logging, and WiFi, but the core physics hasn't changed.
The Doppler Effect
A radio wave bounces off your vehicle. The change in frequency reveals your speed, whether the radar is stationary or moving.
Directional Awareness
Modern radar uses directional antennas to determine if a vehicle is approaching or moving away. Officers can select specific directions to monitor.
Three Frequency Bands
Police radar operates on X band (10.5 GHz), K band (24.05-24.25 GHz), and Ka band (33.4-36.0 GHz). Ka band is the most widely used by law enforcement today.
Instant-On Radar
An officer can trigger the radar manually in short bursts called instant-on. This gives no warning to drivers and is a standard technique in traffic enforcement.

X Band Radar: 10.5 GHz
X band operates at 10.525 GHz and is the oldest police radar frequency. Once the standard, it has been largely replaced by K and Ka band. Most agencies have phased it out, though a few rural departments and older patrol fleets may still use it. New X band equipment is no longer manufactured for law enforcement.
Original Police Radar Band
X band was introduced in the 1960s and was the standard for decades. Its longer wavelength produces a wider beam with less directional precision.
Limited Modern Use
A small number of rural counties still operate X band equipment. Encounters are rare but not impossible, especially in areas with older patrol vehicles.
Replaced by K and Ka Band
K and Ka band offer narrower beam width, better performance, and more features. Nearly all new police radar purchases are Ka band systems.
Still Worth Monitoring
A quality radar detector still scans X band. One encounter with an active X band gun justifies keeping the band enabled.
K Band Radar: 24.05 to 24.25 GHz
K band operates between 24.05 and 24.25 GHz and is widely used by police departments nationwide. It appears in both dash-mounted patrol car units and handheld radar guns. K band is common in the Kansas City metro area and will be encountered regularly on area interstates and surface streets.
Mid-Range Frequency
24.05 to 24.25 GHz — positioned between X and Ka band. Modern detectors pick up K band reliably across the full frequency range.
Dash-Mounted Radar Units
Dash-mounted units sit on the patrol car dashboard and operate while moving or stationary. They transmit continuously when active.
Handheld Radar Guns
Handheld K band guns are used by motorcycle officers and for stationary enforcement. They operate on the same frequencies as dash-mounted radar.
Common in Kansas City
K band is the default radar frequency in the Kansas City metro. It is used daily on Johnson County highways, interstates, and local roads.

Ka Band Radar: 33.4 to 36.0 GHz
Ka band is the newest and most capable police radar. Spanning 33.4 to 36.0 GHz, it is the standard for state highway patrols. Wide Frequency Range
33.4 to 36.0 GHz — a wide range with multiple segments. Lower-quality detectors can miss weak signals at the edges of this band.
Lower Power, Tighter Beam
Ka band radar typically operates at lower power output than K band. Combined with a narrower beam, this means less signal scatter and reduced warning time.
Stalker DSR 2X and DSR 2X+
The Stalker DSR 2X and DSR 2X+ are dual-antenna, direction-sensing radar systems. They can monitor targets in front and behind simultaneously, in both same-direction and opposite-direction traffic. The DSR 2X+ adds WiFi, the Task Force mobile app, and digital logging.
Installation Quality Matters
Detecting Ka band effectively requires a quality detector and proper installation. Mount location, clean power, and correct settings all affect real-world performance.
Constant-On vs Instant-On Radar
The difference between constant-on and instant-on radar matters for anyone using a radar detector. Constant-on transmits continuously and can be detected at greater distances. Instant-on is triggered manually in short bursts by the officer, giving significantly less warning time. Both techniques are used routinely in traffic enforcement.
Constant-On Radar
The radar transmits continuously when active. A quality detector can pick up the signal from a distance, often before the patrol car is visible. Most dash-mounted units operate this way by default.
Instant-On Radar
The officer triggers the radar manually, often only when a target is visually identified. This produces a brief signal that is much harder to detect at range. Instant-on is standard training for traffic enforcement.
Why Instant-On Matters
Instant-on is used specifically to defeat radar detectors. There is no warning before the signal appears, and once triggered, the officer already has a speed reading.
What to Expect from a Detector
A radar detector can provide early warning of constant-on radar from a significant distance. Against instant-on, the warning window is much smaller. No detector makes a vehicle invisible to radar.

What Radar Detectors Actually Do
A radar detector is an awareness tool — it alerts you when it detects police radar signals nearby. It is not a force field. It cannot make your vehicle invisible to radar, and it does not guarantee you won't receive a citation. Understanding radar technology helps you use a detector effectively and set realistic expectations.
